Spread across a massive, scenic 155-acre campus in the Kumaon mountain division at Dwarahat (Almora district, Uttarakhand), BTKIT is an autonomous, residential government engineering institution. It was established with a specialized master plan modeled after India's premier IITs and RECs to uplift technical education and engineering facilities in the remote Himalayan region. Funded partly through the World Bank-assisted Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP-III), the institute operates multiple undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral departments that nurture regional technical talent alongside mainstream global industrial standards.
The foundation of college was laid under the guidance of Shri Narayan Dutt Tiwari, Govt. of India on April 20, 1986 during the reign of Late Chief Minister Shri Veer Bahadur Singh when 155 acres of land was allotted for college by the UP Govt. Academic session in B.E. was started with 2 branches CSE and ECE in year 1991 with a well planned educational programme, similar to the one followed at IITs and RECs/NITs of the country for the development of technology & engineering education facilities in the Kumaon Region. Seeing the availability, capability and usefulness of land, college prepared a master plan and project report regarding development of college in different fields in the year 1996, which was approved by administrative council. At present, the institute runs seven graduate engineering programmes i.e., Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Biochemical Engineering and three Postgraduate programmes i.e., Masters of Computer Applications, Master of Technology (M. Tech) in CSE and Mechanical departments. Besides this, institute has now started Ph. D. programmes in 2016. The Institute offers several other infrastructural facilities for faculty and students, such as hostels, staff residential campus, departmental buildings, student”s activity club and a multipurpose hall have been developed. An atmosphere conducive to learning and all-round personality development of the students is being created. Emphasis is being laid on self discipline & mutual respect

Admissions to the regular undergraduate B.Tech tracks are centralized and executed via the online counseling panels managed by Uttarakhand Technical University (UTU), prioritizing candidates according to their All India Rank (AIR) in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) or designated state-level counseling cutoffs. Postgraduate selections for M.Tech programs prioritize applicants holding a valid Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) scorecard, with leftover unfilled seats allocated subsequently based on undergraduate qualifying academic merit. For the Master of Computer Applications (MCA) format, admissions are mapped directly through the merit scores and ranks secured in the Uttarakhand State Entrance Examination (UKSEE) counseling grid, while Ph.D. entries require a dedicated university written exam followed by a personal interview (with GATE/NET qualified candidates exempted from the written filter). Final selection and enrollment across all branches remain subject to physical document verification and immediate institutional fee deposition at the Dwarahat campus portal.
For undergraduate admission to the 4-year B.Tech programs, candidates must have passed their 10+2 (Intermediate) examination or its equivalent from the Uttarakhand Board or any other recognized education board, choosing Physics and Mathematics as mandatory subjects alongside one elective technical subject (Chemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science, or Biology) while securing a minimum of 45% marks aggregate (40% for candidates belonging to the statutory SC/ST/OBC reserved categories). For B.Tech Lateral Entry directly into the second year, applicants are required to possess a recognized State Board Engineering Diploma or a B.Sc. degree. Postgraduate engineering candidates entering the M.Tech curriculum must possess a valid B.Tech/B.E. degree in a relevant discipline with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks (50% for SC/ST candidates), whereas entry into the MCA curriculum requires a completed generic or technical Bachelor’s degree (such as BCA or B.Sc. IT/CS) with Mathematics cleared at either the intermediate (10+2) standard or graduation degree level.
